In sunshine or under gloomy grey skies, Cirrus is still one of the most beautiful tracks of the year.
SONG002 A1: Benoit & Sergio - Full Grown Man
the second release on thesongsays seems to find what we might call “romantic techno” in a happier place. sort of. while bruno pronsato’s ‘the make up the break up’ focused on the darker side of romance, benoit & sergio’s ‘what i’ve lost’ raises a similar question: can we ever be really satisfied?
benoit & sergio chose ‘full grown man,’ as the opener. the bravado of the initial vocals—‘i need a lady to understand i’m a full grown man’—references the masculine posturing of, say, led zeppelin’s “whole lotta love,” but also calls attention to the vulnerability and neediness of this masculinity. and when we are seduced into drinking a little wine at the track’s midpoint, we realize that this seduction is a mere maneuver to avoid a deeper loneliness. if, lyrically, ‘full grown man’ points to certain emotional complexities, so, too, does the music: somber synth lines overlay short, brassy stabs, as the intricate sequencing shifts its moods like so many teenage boys.

On this album Andrew Weatherall has partnered with Timothy J. Fairplay as The Asphodells. Their friendship goes back to Tim’s time with Battant in the latter part of the 2000s with Andrew helping out on production. Tim has been responsible for a number of independent tracks variously on Astro Lab Recordings, World Unknown, Bird Scarer, Emotional Response and Magic Feet. He has played live across Europe including at Fabric in London and Robert Johnson in Germany and DJs at regular Glasgow night Crimes of the Future with Scott Fraser.
Musically the album’s yet another game changer. Andrew has left behind the rock and roll leanings of Wrong Meeting and A Pox on the Pioneers and looks back over his shoulder to the purer electronics of the Kraftwerk-inflected Two Lone Swordsmen but without the sparse introspection that characterised those times. Now the music is saturated in repetitive beats overlaid with sinuous melodies played out over whole tracks. Songs still feature but sound haunted, guitars still ground the tracks but are more resonant. John Betjeman’s ‘Late Flowering Lust’ sits surprisingly comfortably alongside A.R. Kane’s ‘A Love from Outer Space’ but ultimately it’s Weatherall and Fairplay that imbue the album with it’s own sense of a journey through a time and space that only dimly reflects our own.
Taragana Pyjarama - Ocean (Paxton Fettel’s Coastal Sunset remix)
La découverte sympa du jour. Ce genre de morceau qu’on est capable de laisser tourner des heures durant en gigotant inconsciemment le popotin.
Parfait pour la glande d’un dimanche maussade.

Norwell - Harmonia
Hypnotizing, uplifting, all the while entirely methodical, Norwell blends an astute use of grainy analogue synths textures to modern electronic music structures to form a perfectly balanced brain dance.
His second 6-track EP “Harmonia” will be released May 24th 2013, on Box Records, with a haunting remix by Applescal.
